The community my beat is focusing on is my community of Washington Heights. Washington Heights is made up of a mostly Hispanic/Latinx population but as of recent years more young/college aged white residents have moved in. With this, there was an unexpected surge of protests last summer. For years prior, most residents who chose to protest would go downtown and join the larger protests. However, the outrage has grown so large that they now protest right on the streets of Washington Heights. They have even blocked off the entrance to the George Washington Bridge as recently as last month. The community is the most vocal now then it has ever been when it comes to police brutality and racial injustices which shows how deep the cause has gotten.
