The community I have chosen to cover this semester is of Masjid Al Taqwa in Brooklyn, NY. I interviewed one of the administrators at this Masjid as a part of my research for the community. When speaking to this woman, Maajeida Abdulsalaam, I asked her about the Masjid’s response to covid. She expressed that it has been hard for them as in Islam praying side by side with your fellow muslims is a big deal. They have used online platforms like many other religious groups and have live streamed many sermons and prayers. As of right now we are in the Islamic month of a Ramadan that consists of daily fasting from sunrise to sunset, and concludes with hours long prayer known as Taraweh at night after breaking the fast. Typically, Taraweh takes place in the Masjid but because of the covid-19 capacity restrictions, many are doing it at home.
