The community I have chosen to cover this semester is that of Masjid At Taqwa in Brooklyn, NY. This masjid is known for having a diverse community of Muslims from various cultural backgrounds like middle eastern members, south asian members, and African American members. As the BLM protests took place around the globe this past year, the community at Masjid At Taqwa stayed involved in any way they could. Not wanting to risk exposure to Covid-19, the religious leaders at Masjid At Taqwa such as Imam Siraj Wahhaj set up live broadcasts calling his communities attention to the BLM issues at hand. Using their instagram platform, Masjid At Taqwa spread important information regarding George Floyd’s case and expressed their support for the BLM movement as a whole.
